The Development Squad caters for swimmers who do and who do not wish to compete in licensed galas.
Swimming is such a skills-based sport with many complex actions to each of the four strokes’ mechanics. Swimmers that attend two or more sessions per week are more likely to acquire these necessary skills due to the ability of the coaches to re-enforce the acquired skill before it is forgotten, therefore allowing for new skills to be learnt and mastered.
Sound technique is a swimmer’s most important requirement to being successful. Technique requires focus and concentration on the task. Having a sound technical foundation allows the swimmer to progress more quickly.
As in any competitive sport, the ability to race is extremely important. As each swimmer progresses they will be encouraged to compete in local competitions under guidance from the coaches, this enables coaches and swimmers to see progress: a huge confidence booster.
Swimmers are expected to be on poolside at least 5 minutes before the start of their session with all their equipment, including a good size drink bottle filled with diluted squash or juice. Fizzy drinks and glass bottles are not permitted on poolside.
All swimmers are expected to have respect for the coaching staff, be willing to learn and to support their teammates in training and competitions.
What Coaches Expect from Swimmers
Coaches expect regular attendance at training sessions. We strongly recommend that swimmers attend 2 sessions per week at this level. Swimmers need to be in the appropriate swimwear and to have the appropriate kit:
Girls: costumes should fit the size you are, not two sizes too big – for you to grow in to, the likelihood is that they will wear out well before you grow.
Boys: fitted shorts/trunks. Baggy shorts are not swimwear; they are for wearing on the beach.
All: Short training fins, kick-board (and stretch-band from Junior Squad up).
What Development Swimmers Expect from Coaches
A positive and caring attitude to your progress with constant work on improving technique, support and advice on entering competitions. There will be support when you are at competitions.
Promotion Criteria to ‘Junior Active’ or ‘Junior’ Squad
You will need to attend two (advisable) or three (preferable) sessions per week, as you will be strongly encouraged to attend three sessions per week once in Junior Squad.
Show ability to hold good technique over 100m distance on back stroke, breast stroke, front crawl and 50m butterfly, a positive attitude and a willingness to compete at local competitions.
All promotions are at the discretion of the Head Coach.

Development Training Times
